The Classification Record

The paper trail behind the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, censused with respect

The census

What the proof rests on, enumerated

We transcribed and graded every reference in two bibliographies the field wrote about its own proof: the four reference sections of Surveys 172 (Aschbacher, Lyons, Smith and Solomon, 2011), the second-generation account of the characteristic-2 half, and the one continuous bibliography of Gorenstein's 1986 Bulletin survey of the original proof. Five hundred and seven records, each graded on one axis only: was the cited work published literature, or not.

One axis: published, or not

Publication status is not a quality judgement. A thesis is not an error, and every non-published entry here may be perfectly sound mathematics. The claim is narrower and harder: as of the field's own roadmaps, about one reference in twenty was not peer-reviewed published literature, and nobody was keeping track of which.

A note on estimates dying on contact with enumeration: before the census, a proxy guess put the Surveys 172 reference count at "roughly 470 to 490". Counted, it is 352. That gap, between the estimate and the enumeration, is the whole reason to count.

Where the gaps concentrate

The gaps are not spread evenly. In Surveys 172 the shared foundations, the results both halves of the proof lean on, are 100% published. Every non-published reference sits in the case-specific and expository layers, where the load is narrower and the tracking looser.

The shared foundations carry no non-published references at all. The gaps sit where the load is narrower.

The full census

507 records. Non-published entries are shaded. Surveys 172 first, then the Gorenstein 1986 survey; within each, non-published entries lead. The one repeated tag ([Lyo72]) labels two different papers and is a catch in its own right.

429 of 507 titles link to the work's stable record: the DOI where one exists (300 entries), otherwise the zbMATH review page. Identifiers were resolved against zbMATH Open and Crossref on 2026-07-26 under a strict bibliographic gate: first author, year, and either the full volume-and-page range or the title with its part numeral intact, so part I never borrows part II's identifier. A part reviewed inside a combined record links that record's page, not another part's DOI. Anything that failed the gate stays unlinked rather than guessed. Hover a linked title for its identifier.
